Overview
This dataset combines 29 HDSS data in sub-Saharan Africa to allow analysis across sites and to provide a continental prospective. Depending on the purpose of analysis, the data may be disaggregated into regions within sub-Saharan Africa or more urban sites may be analysed separately. To date this data has been used to answer the following questions:· What is the role of having a younger or older sibling on under-five mortality? What if the sibling dies? Or they do not live together?
· What is the role of mother's presence on under-five mortality? Does the effect of her death differ to the effect of her non-residence?
· Do migrants have different risks of death than permanent residents? Does this change according to duration since migration? Does this relationship vary by age?

Coverage
HDSS sites within thirteen sub-Saharan African countries. HDSS are geographically delineated locations and data covers the entire population in those locations. Each site is of different size. The data includes complete populations - that is, individuals of all ages and sexes, and their event history. The residence variable included in the dataset indicates whether the individual is considered present or not in the HDSS site.
